The ultimate goal when performing CPR is to send oxygenated blood throughout the body(ESPECIALLY THE BRAIN!!). The purpose of compressions is to distribute the blood for the person's body, as their body is incapable of doing so at the time. You can perform CPR on an adult, child, or infant. Here is how to classify them: ADULT- 8 years old + CHILD- Between 1-8 years old INFANT- Below 1 year The main difference between the types of CPR for an adult vs a child vs an infant is, for adult CPR you are using both hands for compressions, one hand for child (MAY VARY DEPENDING ON SIZE), and two fingers for an infant. When performing CPR on an adult, your ventilations(breaths) will be two FULL breaths. For a child, you will give two HALF breaths. And for an infant, TWO,SMALL puffs of air.
*Please keep in mind, that if you do not know the person/aren’t related to the person who is in need of CPR, you should use a barrier/mouthpiece for the ventilations.*
For ventilations of a baby, you will need to place your mouth of both their mouth AND their nose.
DEPTH OF COMPRESSIONS SHOULD BE: Adult & Child- 5cm or 2in Infant- 4.5cm or 1.5inch
